Collage Poetry in Support of Libraries

I ran this collage poetry workshop at Stirchley Library as part of the Library Awareness Walks on Saturday 11 May 2024, between the morning and afternoon walks.

Libraries are so important to the communities of which they are a part, and those on the well-attended walk wanted to communicate their love of libraries. The walk was part of being able to do this, and in this workshop people used found words to express themselves in poetry. Even those who feel that they cannot write poetry find it enjoyable to form one from collaged words.

The brief was to make a haiku, which is three lines of five, then seven, then five syllables. For example (this haiku about the workshop):

Paper, glue, and love —
haikus bloom in libraries,
stories glued to page.

But a variety of poems and expressions emerged. These will now been archived at Birmingham Archive through the Bookmarks Project, run by People's Heritage Co-Operative, which was sparked by the Library Awareness Walks and associated activities.
